Acorn is a well-loved Nursery School established in 1979 by Jane Cameron who has since set up Notting Hill Preparatory School (for children aged 4-13). It follows the EYFS with elements of Montessori teaching and has 21 teaching staff all of whom have the appropriate Montessori and Early Years qualifications. The nursery has the use of a large communal garden which the older children access weekly for a range of sport and exploration activities. The youngest group (2.5-3.5) benefit from constant access to a well-planned outside area. There are focused sessions once a week from the deputy head on phonics and most children leave knowing all their letter sounds and reading simple words (this strength was picked up on in the recent Ofsted Report in 2017). Extra-curricular classes and extended afternoons are on offer in Swimming, Tennis and Drama for the eldest group of children in preparation for school. There are 19 member of staff with 15 holding relevant early years qualifications but no fully qualified teachers. Applications favour siblings and those living in the vicinity and it is generally easier to get in for afternoons then mornings. Children go on to a range of popular prep schools including Thomas, Pembridge Hall and Wetherby with many going on to Notting Hill Prep School.
